Industrial Ethernet
The Ethernet for the industrial environment
In the harsh manufacturing environment, the components of a data network are exposed to much greater loads than in office buildings: dust, moisture, chemicals, mechanical loads, extreme temperatures and much higher electromagnetic loads place enormous demands on the cabling.
In addition to the high load capacity, maximum reliability and availability are required in production, as a failure, even of short duration, inevitably leads to high financial losses. The quality and reliability of components - especially junction boxes and plug connections - are of crucial importance in an industrial environment.
In addition to DIN EN 50173-3, other standards therefore also apply to industrial buildings, particularly for testing components.
Types of protection
In addition to the quality of carefully matched components, protection against solid and liquid substances is also important for industrial applications. The international standard IEC 60529 defines a simple designation system with the IP code (International Protection): the first digit indicates protection against the ingress of solid bodies such as dust, the second digit indicates protection against water / moisture.
